– Diet and exercise can cure type 1 diabetes.


Diet and exercise can control diabetes and help in managing the disease but it is not effective for curing or reversing diabetes.

– Consuming too much sugar causes diabetes.


Diabetes occurs when the body fails to produce insulin or produces very less insulin. Factors that lead to Type 1 diabetes can be genetic and environmental factors. In type 2 diabetes, the body fails to use the insulin and it occurs due to obesity and family history. Sugar is not the main cause but taking sugary drinks has been known to cause the risk of diabetes. Taking sugary foods makes a person obese and this leads to diabetes.

– You can get diabetes from someone who has the disease.


The disease does not spread from one person to another. It is not contagious. However, if your parents have diabetes or if it is a hereditary condition in your family, there is a risk of diabetes.

Myth 4

– People who have Type 1 diabetes can take sugar-free foods.


Sugar-free foods can cause great harm to people who have Type 1 diabetes as they contain high amounts of carbohydrates. Thus, always read the nutrition label of the foods so that you know about the contents.

– There is no need of checking the sugar levels as it can be easily judged if the sugar is high or low.


Although you can sometimes feel if you have low sugar, it is not possible to find always when the sugar levels fall. It is important to test the blood sugars rather than just trusting your feeling. Take steps to combat hypoglycemia when the sugar levels become less by using a glucose testing kit.

– Insulin cures diabetes.

– People who have diabetes should cut sugar from the diet


Controlling and reducing the sugar intake is a part of healthy diet plan. However, you don’t have to remove sugar fully from the diet. Having sweets and desserts daily is not recommended but sweets can be taken occasionally. Besides sugar, you need to control the intake of refined foods made of white flour.

– Special diabetic food is required for people who suffer from diabetes


No special diabetic diet is required for those who have diabetes. Every person should have a healthy diet irrespective of whether he or she has diabetes or not. Diabetic people need to change their food habits by taking low-fat and non-sugary foods with whole grains included in the diet. Take salt in limited amounts. Include fruits and veggies in your diet. Myth 9

– Overweight people will surely have type-2 diabetes


There is a higher risk of getting diabetes if you are overweight. However, just being obese doesn’t lead to the conclusion that you will definitely develop the problem of diabetes. Age and family history are some factors besides the weight of a person that makes a person prone to having diabetes. There are other reasons for developing diabetes apart from having obesity. There is a high chance that you may not develop diabetes even if you are overweight. Also, it has been seen that people with normal weight or those who are slim do develop diabetes despite having the weight in a normal range. Thus, an increased weight alone doesn’t cause the risk of diabetes.

– Complications of diabetes cannot be controlled by the patients


Diabetic patients can fully avoid the complications of their disease if they go for regular checkups by visiting a doctor and doing the medical tests as recommended. Also, they need to do the self-management for diabetes. You can protect yourself from the complications of diabetes if you keep your sugar and blood pressure in the normal range by controlling it with diet and exercise. Also, you need to control the blood cholesterol. If you follow this advice, you can easily stop the harmful effects of diabetes and it will ensure that you don’t have any complications.

– The life expectancy of people who have diabetes is short


Believing that diabetic people have a short lifespan is just a myth and a false belief. It is just not right to think that diabetics won’t survive for long and they have to die soon. In the olden times, there were very less medical facilities and treatment options for diseases so people started believing that diabetics won’t live for long. However, the medical research and modern treatments methods have given many options to people to treat diabetes and live a healthy long life even after they are diagnosed with diabetes. Thus, it will be wrong to say that diabetics have a short lifespan.
